Nanci Milton, born 1957, Minneapolis, USA
After studying theater, modern dance, literature and history, I was pulled back to photography and writing both of which were strong influences in my early years. My work today draws heavily on those elements of movement, narrative and visual metaphor involving photography, assemblage, poetry and installation.
In my images I work to confront memory, history, loss and decay; to revere and elevate the forgotten, the discarded, the left-behind, to hold a mirror; the camera, give voice to, the unnoticed and unseen, or no longer wanted to be seen. To gather these pieces, give these disparate pieces, of image and word, and save them and confront them, in intervention and an interrogation of sorts.
Memory retains, then memory itself decays. Then slips away altogether.
A photograph preserves. Still does not save the subject from decay. But an image can still shape for a moment sight, sense, and thought.
